Frequently Asked Questions

Considering private exercise physiology but not sure what to expect? Here are some of the common questions we hear about how Exercise Physiology works, who it can support and what getting started looks like.

What Is An Exercise Physiologist?

An Exercise Physiologist is an accredited allied health professional who uses exercise and movement to support health, physical function and wellbeing. They work with people across a wide range of health conditions and abilities, developing individualised exercise programs based on each person’s needs, goals and circumstances.

What Can Exercise Physiology Help With?

Exercise physiology can support people managing a range of conditions, injuries and health goals. Depending on your individual circumstances, it may help with:

  • Strength, balance and mobility
  • Physical function and independence
  • Injury recovery and rehabilitation
  • Managing some chronic health conditions
  • Building confidence with movement
  • Supporting mental wellbeing
  • Developing sustainable exercise habits

How Is Exercise Physiology Different From General Exercise?

There’s a big difference between simply exercising and having exercise prescribed and tailored to your individual needs. Accredited Exercise Physiologists consider your health history, current abilities, goals and any relevant risks when developing your program.

What Happens During My First Appointment?

Your first session is about getting to know you and where you’re starting from. Your Exercise Physiologist will discuss your health history, current abilities and goals, complete appropriate assessments and use this information to develop a personalised exercise program.

How Often Will I Need Appointments?

There’s no set schedule that works for everyone. Your appointment frequency will depend on your needs, goals, availability and progress. Your Exercise Physiologist will work with you to find an approach that feels effective and sustainable.

What’s The Difference Between An Exercise Physiologist And A Physiotherapist?

Both are qualified allied health professionals, but their areas of focus can differ. Physiotherapists commonly assess and manage movement, pain, injuries and physical conditions, while Accredited Exercise Physiologists specialise in using structured exercise interventions to help prevent or manage health conditions, injuries and physical limitations.

Depending on your needs, one profession may be more appropriate than the other — and in some cases, they can complement each other as part of your broader care.

What Does “Mobile” Exercise Physiology Mean?

It means we come to you. Rather than travelling to a traditional clinic, your Exercise Physiologist can provide sessions at your home, workplace or another suitable location within our service areas.

Can I Access Private Exercise Physiology Without A Referral?

Yes. You can access our private exercise physiology services without a GP referral, specialist referral or NDIS plan. Simply get in touch with our team to discuss your needs and arrange an appointment.

Can I Claim Exercise Physiology Through Private Health Insurance?

Many private health insurance policies include Exercise Physiology under extras cover, although rebates and eligibility vary between insurers and policies. We recommend checking directly with your health fund to confirm what you’re entitled to claim.

Can I Use Medicare For Exercise Physiology?

If you have a Medicare Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plan or Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan prepared by your GP, you may be eligible for Medicare benefits towards Exercise Physiology. Eligibility and rebates depend on your individual circumstances, so speak with your GP and Medicare for specific advice.
