Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that navigating the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme), psychology and mental health services can raise many questions. To help you better understand how our services can support your journey, we’ve answered some of the most commonly asked questions.

What is a Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA)?

A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) is a detailed evaluation conducted by a qualified allied health professional to assess your ability to manage daily activities, participate in work, education, and social life, and maintain your overall health and wellbeing. FCAs are an important part of NDIS access applications and plan reviews.

Who Can Conduct Functional Capacity Assessments?

There’s a common misconception that only occupational therapists can perform FCAs. NDIS guidelines allow any suitably qualified allied health professional to conduct these assessments. At Health Journey Partner, we match you with the professional best suited to your needs:

How Do You Test Functional Capacity?

During your assessment, your therapist evaluates multiple areas of daily life, including physical abilities, cognitive function, communication, activities of daily living, assistive technology needs, psychological well-being, and participation in work, education, or social activities. Observations are made in your home, community, workplace, or via telehealth, depending on your preferences.

Who Typically Requires a Functional Capacity Assessment?

FCAs are recommended for NDIS participants who are:

  • Applying for NDIS access
  • Requesting a plan review or change of circumstances
  • Considering Supported Independent Living (SIL) or Supported Disability Accommodation (SDA)
  • Experiencing changes in functional abilities due to injury, illness, or disability

Which Professionals Are Qualified to Perform Functional Capacity Assessments?

Our Occupational Therapists (OTs), Psychologists and Physiotherapists have training and experience in NDIS assessments and can perform FCAs. At Health Journey Partner, we carefully match you with the professional who can best assess your individual needs.

Which Standardised Tools or Tests Are Used During an FCA?

We use a combination of evidence-based assessments and practical observations tailored to your situation. These may include tests for physical function, mobility, cognition, communication, daily living tasks, and other areas relevant to your NDIS plan. All assessments are designed to meet NDIA requirements.

How Long Does a Functional Capacity Assessment Take?

A typical FCA takes 2–3 hours, depending on your individual needs and the complexity of your situation. We allow enough time to thoroughly assess all areas without rushing.

What Should I Prepare for My Assessment?

Bring any relevant medical reports, previous assessments, medication lists, and examples of assistive equipment you currently use. Wear comfortable clothing that allows for movement, as you may be asked to demonstrate daily activities.

How Quickly Will I Receive My Report?

We aim to provide your completed FCA report within 10–15 business days. Reports are NDIA-compliant and include clear recommendations to support your NDIS plan.

Can Family Members or Carers Be Present During the Assessment?

Yes! We encourage family members, carers, or support people to join if they can provide insights into your daily challenges. Their input often improves the accuracy and usefulness of the assessment.

What’s the Difference Between an FCA for NDIS Access and Plan Reassessment?

NDIS Access FCAs: Focus on establishing eligibility and baseline support needs.

Plan Reassessment FCAs: Examine changes in functional capacity and evolving support requirements.

Do You Provide Assessments for SIL or SDA?

Yes, we do complete Home and Living Assessments. Apart from this, our FCAs can also inform Supported Independent Living (SIL) and Supported Disability Accommodation (SDA) applications by documenting your support needs. Be sure to discuss your specific accommodation goals during your initial consultation.
